SBAK specializes in working with parents to provide the resources, information, and connections you need to navigate this path. We believe that when parents connect with one another, they receive more practical information than they've ever received in a doctor's office, as well as the support of just knowing they are with people who speak this same language and understand what they are going through.
We also believe that when our children make connections with each other, they understand they are not alone, they learn from and inspire each other, and they make lifelong friends.
SBAK also provides resources, such as our Resource Library, our Financial Assistance Fund, and a staff that is knowledgeable about all types of resources to help your family and answer your questions. If you are experiencing a difficult time, don't know how to address a problem, need to find a doctor, want help planning for an IEP, or whatever question you may have, reach out to us. In the meantime, we offer educational series about topics that we feel are important to our families right now. Recent examples include Medicaid Waivers, IEPs, Intro to Cathing, and Wound Care.
If you are an expectant or new parent of a baby who has Spina Bifida, we provide a safe place for you to ask questions and seek information. Even if you don't know where to start, we'll help get you on the right path. We also offer NICU visits, as well as welcome gifts and car beds, if needed. Check out our Newborn Outreach/Keeping in Touch program.
If you are parent to a young child, SBAK offers a tremendously fun and valuable program called Playtime with Me. In Louisville, we welcome newborn to 6 year olds, and in Lexington and Bowling Green we welcome newborn to 10 year olds. The secret of these playgroups is that they're really for the parents! While parents are chatting about various issues, discussing therapies, asking how another parent has responded to a problem, and supporting each other, the children are playing with and learning from each other. It's a great social opportunity for both parents and children. Bring along the grandparents and siblings too!
In Louisville, we have a brand new program for our 7-14 year olds and their families called SB KidConnect. This program will allow the kids to make connections, as we also work to build self-confidence, physical fitness, and independence skills. It will also be a great place for parents to connect and discuss how to answer those tough questions the kids are asking.
Another new program in Louisville is our Teen Night for 15-19 year olds. This will give teens a chance to connect with others, learn how to be more successful in school, prepare for upcoming transitions, and just have fun. Parents will also have opportunities to connect.
SBAK is continually working to build more communities across the state and offer more meaningful programs. If you are interested in more programs in your area of the state, or would just like to be connected to similar families in your area, call SBAK at (502) 637-7363.
